Maple Lea Grand Duke, a black bull, is part of the famous breed from Margaret & Don Badger, the Maple Lea farm, located in West Bolton in the Eastern Township of Quebec. The Badgers have been breeding Highlands since 1982. Today the Badgers are the owners of the largest Highland herd in Canada, numbering over 300 heads. They cull severely for function and temperament.au Canada.
* Her animals must react calmly to a stressful situation, if not they do not stay in the herd as a breeding animal.
* They do not keep cows who cannot raise their own calf ALONE.
* They also cull for poor udder and large teats.
* They put her bull calves through a bull test programme on the farm and select only those bulls who have an excellent rate of gain – about 2.5 to 3 lb per day – and also come frome excellent dames and sires.
Maple Lea GRAND DUKE is a black bull of exceptionally good temperament with good feet and legs that will improve temperament and milking ability in their herd while maintaining traditional Highland form. He is a full brother of Zenith’s Jester, 1998 Royal Easter Supreme Champion in New Zealand.
Grand Duke’s dam, Mamuthli Wera, is the top milking cow in the Maple Lea herd. She has an exceptional udder and was top choice from among over 100 cows in the herd to produce embryos for New Zealand. Grand Duke’s sire, Rocky Spring Zenith, is an exceptional black son of the outstanding black bull, Royal El Negro of Albeni, from Western Canada.
